Laotian New Year in Cajun Country

The annual Laotian New Year‘s Festival in New Iberia starts today, and continues through Sunday. It takes place at the Wat Thammarattanaram Temple. I was unable to track down a website, so for more information call:  (337) 364-3403.

The Acadian Laotian New Year is celebrated a week early in order to coincide with Good Friday. The festival starts tonight at 8 with a beauty pageant, then continues tomorrow at noon with sandcastle building, water cleansings (?), a parade, food, and Southeast Asian wares. Here is an article from The Daily Iberian about this year’s festival. And here’s a link to some great images of the festival several years ago.
